Haley Williams Speech to the Johnson County Board of Commissioners on the Mask Mandate for K-6th – Kansas
A few facts for your review:
A Danish randomized controlled trial with 6000 participants, published in the Annals of Internal Medicine in November 2020, found no statistically significant effect of high-quality medical face masks against SARS-CoV-2 infection in a community setting.
A July 2020 review by the Oxford Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine found that there is no evidence for the effectiveness of face masks against virus infection or transmission

Children are at a VERY LOW RISK from covid-19. It has been likened to LIGHTNING STRIKING.

Children spread Covid-19 much less than adults.

WHAT DOES THAT MEAN? That they are FOR SHOW. They are for OPTICS.
I could give you study after study and fact after fact, but I’m afraid it would be a waste of my time. Why? Because in vote after vote you have shown yourselves not to be concerned with what science says or what the majority of parents want but what the very vocal minority demands.
I’m concerned you don’t care about the data; concerned that science and all the research and evidence-based information in the world couldn’t change your mind. Why?
The reason we are here is because you are conducting political theatre and caving and cowering to the pressures of powers that be and REFUSING to listen to the stakeholders in this conversation: the parents and children. The ONLY ONES who are qualified to advocate for their children and make PERSONAL health decisions for a child is their parents.
I firmly believe masks are ineffective, but I am not going around telling other parents they can’t mask their child. They are telling me I must mask mine.
And my answer today? NO.
Thomas Jefferson penned these words in the Declaration of Independence:
Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.”
This is America. And our system of government is a REPRESENTATIVE DEMOCRACY. This is not a monarchy or a dictatorship, so STOP ACTING AS TYRANTS.
You, county commissioners, have veered from your duty discharged to you by the founding documents of this nation and ultimately by God Himself. You are usurping authority in dictating to parents how their children may breathe clean air. You are overstepping your bounds in mandating things that are not only outside your jurisdiction but proven not to work.
Do you know how I know masks don’t work? I don’t even need a double blind study to figure that out. I can look at last year and then today and see that if they had worked, we wouldn’t be here today. And if they didn’t work, we shouldn’t be here today.
WE all have a role to play in preserving freedom. YOURS TODAY IS TO SAY NO TO THE CONTINUATION OF AN INEFFECTIVE, DANGEROUS AND ASININE MASK MANDATE.
This is unscientific. It is not based on research or data – it is rooted in fear, promoted under the guise of public health and firmly built upon the idolatry and illusion of control.
Ronald Reagan famously reminded us that “Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction.”
Make the right choice today- and if you do not, our fight has just begun.
